John S. Newsome
MBA, Principal

Responsible for acquisition and sales. Mr. Newsome, along with Mr. Mike Doyle, established Stanford Management Group, Inc. and SMG Property Management, Inc. to oversee the acquisition and management of commercial real estate properties.  Since the founding of both corporations in 1988, Mr. Newsome has overseen the property management of SMG’s portfolio as well as the asset management of SMG’s properties. 

Mr. Newsome has over 25 years of experience with Equitable and Maryland National Bank in Baltimore.  His expertise and experience include heading the National and International lending areas, the formation of Cash Management Services, and heading all commercial bank operations.

Mr. Newsome is also responsible for the acquisition and development of properties, including raw, industrial and residential lands, multi-family, office buildings and shopping centers.

John Stewart

Consultant 

Mr. Stewart holds an MBA degree with a specialization in Finance from the University of Chicago, and a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemical Engineering from Widener University where he received admission into Tau Beta Pi, the engineering Honor Society. He is also a graduate of the inaugural class of Advanced Management Development Program in Real Estate (AMPD) at the Harvard School of Design. Mr. Stewart’s experience includes over 15 years at SIP’s predecessor company, Minshall Stewart Properties. During his time at the company, Mr. Stewart was principally involved with the acquisition of over 4.0 million square feet of commercial space and arranged and closed over $725 million of debt and equity financing's. Transaction experience during this time included the off-market acquisition and strategic implementation of over $500 million of successfully redeveloped office buildings in downtown Washington DC.

Mr. Stewart is responsible for the overall strategic vision of the Company, developing and implementing its investment strategies, as well as both cultivating and maintaining its important relationships with institutional debt and equity capital providers.

Mike Simmons

Consultant

 

Mr. Simmons is a graduate of Michigan State University where he received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Accounting.Mr. Simmons has executed investments across various strategies, investment structures, property types, and geographic markets and has successfully closed over 70 assets, encompassing approximately 11.3 M square feet of commercial space, 3,500 residential units, and nearly $2B in investment activity. 

Mr. Simmons has been actively involved in the acquisition and management of institutional quality real estate for 20 years, including nearly 16 years with Heitman, a $40B real estate investment manager, where he was responsible for identifying, underwriting, and closing on direct equity investments for the firm’s commingled investment funds and institutional separate account clients. Mr. Simmons is responsible for identifying and executing the firm’s investment strategies, raising debt and equity capital, and overseeing asset management duties across the portfolio.

Greg Sullivan

Chief Accounting Officer

 

Mr. Sullivan is responsible for all accounting, budgeting and financial reporting with SMG Property Management.  With more than 12 years in the multi-family property management industry, Mr. Sullivan has acquired solid finance skills.  He brings to every task the essential breadth of experience necessary for the job.  He has extensive experience in scaling and creating robust accounting systems that serve the needs of growing businesses.  He has significant experience in all aspects of business valuations and he also brings a significant wealth of accounting experience, including tax preparation and compliance for several states in the United States.

Joseph A. Arena

Senior Financial Analyst 

 

Mr. Arena has over 40 years of experience as CEO and CFO with both public and private companies.  His experience includes mergers and acquisitions, integration of business entities, financial reporting, internal controls, cash management, Sarbanes-Oxley compliance and other finance and accounting related skills.

Nicole Jackson

Executive Assistant/Regional Manager

 

Mrs. Jackson is the Executive Assistant and Regional Manager for SMG Property Management.  She is responsible for managing the Partners’ day to day needs, with flexibility and executive skill.  In addition to this role, she is responsible for providing general administrative support to the office personnel, and leading special projects for the entire portfolio. 

 

Mrs. Jackson’s career in residential property management has spanned over 20 years and she has held multiple positions in the industry, ranging from A/R Specialist to Regional Manager.  She oversees the management of  properties in the Sarasota, FL area, as well as all properties in South Carolina, Tennessee and Mississippi. As an efficient and versatile professional, Mrs. Jackson has the knowledge and background to ensure all day to day operations are met and exceeded. 

Jim Hudson

Managing Director

Mr. Hudson is the Managing Director of SMG Property Management and enjoys over 22 years of residential property management experience.  He has extensive experience in all aspects of the industry. Mr. Hudson currently has oversight responsibilities of Regional and Assistant Regional Managers based in Virginia and Florida. Additionally, he manages more than 900 residential units located throughout Michigan and Ohio.  Mr. Hudson is responsible for all facets of residential management including preparation of annual budgets, financial cash flow forecasting, P&L statements, property tax appeals, HR as well as management and marketing plans.  Jim is an experienced team builder and has a proven track record of increasing NOI through identifying additional revenue generating opportunities and controlling expenses.  He excels in assessing a property’s potential, capital needs and opportunities for re-positioning. 

Vince Grote

Regional Property Manager

 

Mr. Grote is Regional Property Manager to the properties in Gainesville, Jacksonville and Palatka, FL, in addition to overseeing our Maintenance Program and Inspections at all SMG properties.

Mr. Grote’s career in residential property management began in 1999 when he was honorably discharged from the Air Force and started work as a Maintenance Technician.  Since then, he has held many positions in the industry and received several awards for his work in property management.

Sonya Musel

Regional Property Manager

Mrs. Musel is  a Regional Property Manager for  properties in Virginia, West Virginia and Michigan. In addition to her role as a Regional Property Manager, overseeing the operations and management of various properties, Mrs. Musel has also herself managed The Links Apartments in Ohio since 2007. She has been working in residential property management since 1994 and holds two and half decades worth of knowledge and expertise in the industry. In her role, Mrs. Musel is responsible for creating budgets, assisting with renovation projects, and overseeing day-to-day activities and responsibilities of property staff.

Pamela Pomeroy

Director of Human Resources

 

Ms. Pomeroy joined SMG in June of 2018, bringing with her, over a decades worth of experience in Administrative and Management roles covering a range of different industries. In her position,

Ms. Pomeroy is tasked with overseeing HR systems and benefit plans, handling employee relations, and assessing staffing needs across SMG's entire portfolio. This includes, attracting top talent, overseeing the hiring process of new employees,  on boarding new hires, leading training programs and ensuring compliance of all employees with applicable regulations.

She studied Accounting at Florida State University and utilizes her background in finance accompanied by her experience in Human Capital Management to  provide risk mitigation, compliance assurance, as well as an efficient on-boarding and training process for SMG employees.

Jacqueline Willsey
Director of Marketing

Ms. Willsey's addition to SMG, comes with a collection of experience in both management and marketing roles for various Fortune 500 companies in the greater New York City area. Her collective experience in similar roles across various industries, brings fresh perspective and profession specific skills to the SMG team. In her role leading the portfolio's marketing operations,  Ms. Willsey is responsible for the development and direction of SMG’s marketing strategy, online advertising and social media presence. This includes reputation management, brand management and content creation for each of the communities in our portfolio.

She holds her B.S in Management and Marketing from Fairfield University, and utilizes her background in both professions to drive the focus of SMG’s marketing strategy in a progressive and profitable manner.
